Continuing his journey around the world, the traveling exhibition “Religious Tolerance: Islam in the Sultanate of Oman” successively visited between October 2011 and August 2012 four Spanish cities: Tarragona, Barcelona, Madrid and Cordoba.
Tarragona: 3 to 21 October 2011
The UNESCO Chair of the Dialogue between cultures and religions at the Spanish University Rovira i Virgili sponsored the exhibition “Religious Tolerance: Islam in the Sultanate of Oman”. This initiative formed an opportunity for Spanish students to deepen their knowledge of the true and peaceful Islam, reported the director of the UNESCO Chair and the Vice-Dean of the Spanish University Rovira i Virgili. Such events indeed contribute to the development of scientific and academic exchanges between university professors and to the mutual understanding between people from different cultures and civilizations, they said. Within two weeks, the exhibition welcomed over 4,000 visitors.

The traveling exhibition “Religious Tolerance: Islam in the Sultanate of Oman” opened in Barcelona at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Catalonia (ICAC), bringing together representatives of the three revealed religions, Islam, Christianity and Judaism. The President of the ICAC gave an overview of a discussion paper on how to build the foundations for a fruitful dialogue between religions and cultures in Catalonia and praised the initiative of Oman to spread the message of interfaith tolerance and peace in the world. The Deputy Chief Rabbi of Barcelona called to work together for peace in the world, to fight against violence and to promote intercultural dialogue, acknowledging that Islam is a victim in recent years of a media disinformation campaign. The representative of the Catholic Church underlined that the peace messages drawn from the revealed religions invite to promote the common aspects between Christianity and Islam to achieve a positive coexistence of peoples and groups within the same society. The exhibition, which attracted within a month visitors from different social classes, ethnicities and nationalities, particularly interested the younger generations looking for an exchange of knowledge based on the experience of the Sultanate of Oman in the field of religious tolerance and coexistence.
Madrid: 4 to 11 May 2012
The inauguration ceremony of the traveling exhibition emerged as a major event at the Complutense University, the largest of Spain, bringing together the Arab diplomatic corps in Madrid, Spanish government representatives and academic researchers with an interest in the Arab-Islamic culture, as well as social actors, members of various communities, Arab and foreign students. Organized at the initiative of the Faculty of Philology and Letters, the cultural event aimed to provide clear answers that may allow the European public to correct false assumptions about Muslims and their religion. The exhibition featured the screening of a documentary, as well as a set of paintings explaining the foundations of the Islamic religion, the meaning of religious tolerance, aspects of daily life and the role of women in the Sultanate of Oman.
Cordoba: June 7 – 1st August 2012
Visitors to the exhibition on religious tolerance in Oman, located in the Living Library of Al-Andalus, gained an overview of the fundamentals of Islam. To access the understanding of this topic, the public relied on the graphic and audiovisual material that was presented to become acquainted with the experience of Oman favoring the coexistence of religions and removing the false prejudices misused against Islam and Muslims.
